Indigenous Music of Kodiak: Echoes of the Past, Voices of the Future

Indigenous Music of Kodiak: Echoes of the Past, Voices of the Future is the first installment in a powerful documentary series that explores the rich musical heritage of Kodiak Island’s Alutiiq people. This film highlights the cultural significance of traditional music, tracing its deep historical roots and evolution through time—especially as it faced outside influences and periods of silence. Blending interviews, archival material, and performance clips, it also offers a glimpse into traditional instruments, vocal techniques, and ceremonial practices. Most importantly, it amplifies the voices of those working to preserve and revive this vital art form, carrying its message into the future.

This film was produced during the 2025 AHA (Anchored Histories Alaska) teacher retreat, with generous funding from the Department of Education National Activities Grant.
