The Forgotten Slavery of Our Ancestors Kindling Conversation Guide
This conversation guide was developed in partnership with Alaska Humanities Forum and their Kindling Conversations Program. They are designed to host conversations in the classroom or over dinner with friends.
It explores the question: How can we honor and share Indigenous stories about slavery in our history? in connection with the film “The Forgotten Slavery of Our Ancestors” by Howdice Brown, produced by See Stories, Teaching Tolerance, and co-producer Alice Qannik Glenn in 2020.
This 12:23 min film uncovers the story of Indigenous enslavement in what is today the United States. From the Wampanoag to the Sugpiaq/ Alutiiq people – these stories have been forgotten by history. It’s time to bring these stories back to our collective understanding of the past.
The film is part of Teaching Tolerance’s Teaching Hard History Framework video series.
