It’s Time For Movie Monday!

Movie Monday: Connection to Salmon
This week’s Movie Monday takes us to Naknek, where student filmmaker Brooke Phelps gives us a fun, behind-the-scenes look at how salmon are connected to her life, family, and future.
Through a casual, vlog-style interview, Brooke takes us around her family’s fishing operation, introducing us to the boats, equipment, and traditions that are part of her summers on the water. For Brooke, fishing is an important part of supporting her family and helping provide for their future. Her family’s fishing traditions go back generations and today, Brooke and her siblings are continuing those traditions and learning the importance of keeping them alive.
We love getting to see salmon through the eyes of young people like Brooke and hearing what these connections mean to them and their communities.
Watch Brooke’s film Connection to Salmon and hear how salmon continue to shape family traditions and the next generation of Bristol Bay fishermen.
This film was produced during the 2026 Currents of Connection youth media workshop in Naknek. The workshop was made possible by generous support from the World Wildlife Fund and Bristol Bay Economic Development, in partnership with Native Movement, Bristol Bay Media, the Naknek Native Village Council, and the Bristol Bay Museum.
