Movie Monday: One Fish, One Community

Each week, we share short films created through See Stories programs. These films highlight stories of place, culture, and community from across Alaska.

Our Movie Monday series continues with One Fish, One Community, the next film in the Currents of Connection series from Naknek.

Naknek is a community that runs on fish. Each summer, people from across the Bristol Bay watershed come together to participate in the harvest, bringing with them different experiences and perspectives connected to wild salmon.

In One Fish, One Community, a film by Naknek student Teya Olsen, local fishermen and community members share what salmon means to them, from a way of life passed down through generations to a source of connection, opportunity, and community. Their stories also look toward the future, speaking about the importance of protecting the water, caring for the natural resources that sustain Bristol Bay, and making sure salmon continue to return for generations to come.

“We may come from different walks of life, but we’re united by one fish.”

These films were produced during the 2026 Currents of Connection youth media workshop in Naknek. Made possible by generous support from the World Wildlife Fund and the Bristol Bay Economic Development, with partnership from Native Movement, Bristol Bay Media, the Naknek Native Village Council, and the Bristol Bay Museum.
