Culturally Modified Tree Documentation in Angoon

During the Spring of 2025, See Stories led a project with High School students in Angoon’s CTE class- documenting Culturally Modified Trees (CMTs) using 3D photogrammetry, storymapping, and remote sensing data. Students earned college credit from the University of Alaska Southeast after documenting ~20 trees in an area near Angoon that is slated for road development, in relation to the Thayer Creek Hydroelectric Project.

This film, made by See Stories collaborator Alyson Kenney, highlights Angoon students efforts in the field while working on CMT documentation, and reflects the significance of the project to the Angoon community.

Gunalchéesh (thank you) to our many partners and supporters on this project: Chatham School District, Kootznoowoo Inc., University of Alaska Southeast, the US Forest Service, University of Hawaii Hilo, Hawaii Community College, and the Kolea Research Institute.
