Teaching ANILCA: Student Films & Lesson Plans

See Stories is proud to share a SNEAK PREVIEW of our new collection of films and lesson plans exploring the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA)
- Each lesson stands alone. They are designed for educators to choose the parts that fit with your class.
- Our goal is to help students gain a basic understanding of ANILCA and to see multiple perspectives. There is a lot more to learn; we don’t cover it all.
- Standards-aligned. Each lesson meets multiple new social studies standards for 9th-grade Alaska Studies.
Background for this project:
With generous support from Audubon Alaska and the Jeanne S. Williams Fund at Alaska Conservation Foundation, See Stories led an internship with 6 young adults to learn about a law that shapes land management and subsistence across the state: the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA). Our ANILCA interns came from all corners of Alaska including Kodiak, Wrangell, Angoon, Anchorage, Nikolai, and Akiak. Initially most interns said they didn’t know much about this 1980 legislation; after 8 months of research and learning about ANILCA, interviewing over 8 knowledge bearers and national experts, the interns each produced a documentary film about a different aspect of ANILCA.
Their films highlight the crucial role that ANILCA plays in managing and conserving Alaska’s federal land, while giving special attention to conveying the many and diverse perspectives on this topic.
This fall, See Stories staff created lesson plans to go with each film, so classroom teachers can explore the topic of ANILCA with your students!
