See Stories 2024 Year-End Reflection: A Year of Storytelling, Connection, and Impact

As we kick off 2025, we at See Stories are taking a moment to reflect on the incredible milestones, powerful stories, and deep connections that have shaped this past year. From historic acknowledgments to youth-driven storytelling, this year has reaffirmed the power of sharing our voices and histories.

Honoring the Past & Looking to the Future

One of the most significant moments of 2024 was standing alongside the people of Angoon as the United States Navy issued an official apology for the 1882 bombardment of the Tlingit village. This long-overdue recognition was a profound step toward healing, and it was an honor for See Stories to support youth in documenting this historic event. In the words of Angoon High School junior Angel Jack, who created the film Healing Through Time:

“Finally getting to hear those words, after it happened everyone was cheering and some people were crying. I was really happy.”

This year also brought opportunities to uplift young filmmakers and educators across Alaska. Our Virtual Youth Film Festival and Movie Monday series celebrated the work of students and teachers sharing their communities’ stories through film. We saw educators come together for our Anchored Histories Alaska course and in-person retreat in Homer, deepening their commitment to inclusive, culturally responsive storytelling.

A Year of Recognition & Growth

In 2024, See Stories was deeply honored to receive the Governor’s Humanities Award, recognizing our dedication to amplifying voices through storytelling. This award belongs to every student, educator, and community member who has been part of our journey—your stories are what make See Stories thrive.

Looking Ahead to 2025

With the new year ahead, we are excited to continue our mission of uplifting voices, preserving histories, and fostering meaningful connections through storytelling. We can’t wait to see what stories emerge in 2025, and we invite you to be part of this journey with us.
